Ohio-born Adele Goldberg is one of the most respected engineers of the software industry. She co-developed a customizable, easy-to-use programming language called Smalltalk-80, which paved the way for overlapping windows on displays. Yes, we have her to thank for the power to move our word processors and web browsers over each other.
Much of Goldberg’s work inspired the ever-popular graphical user interface (GUI), and her company, Neometron, provides internet support while Goldberg works to provide community colleges with courses suited to technologists.
